Pada sungai yang aliran airnya tenang eceng gondok dapat tumbuh dan berkembang dengan baik, tetapi pada sungai yang deras eceng gondok cenderung untuk hanyut terbawa air. Dengan begitu, membuang sampah ke sungai-sungai yang dapat menghambat aliran air dan sangat mendukung tumbuhnya eceng gondok dengan baik.
Pada perairan yang dangkal, terutama yang berlumpur, eceng gondok tumbuh lebih baik dibanding pada perairan yang dalam, hal ini erat kaitannya dengan kandungan nutrisi dalam lumpur yang lebih banyak dan lebih mudah diserap oleh tanaman dari pada di perairan dalam.

Dengan banyaknya dampak negatif yang dapat ditimbulkan oleh eceng gondok, maka penanganan atau pengelolaan tanaman ini harus dilaksanakan dengan lebih serius. Biaya pengawasan dan penanggulangan masalah eceng gondok ini memang tidak sedikit, karena itu maka partisipasi masyarakat untuk menjaga kondisi lingkungan perairan agar tetap bersih dengan misalnya tidak membuang sampah ke dalam sungai, secara bergotong-royong mengangkat eceng gondok dari permukaan air, sangat diperlukan untuk mengurangi penyebaran tanaman tersebut.
